Brent Johnson
3 yrs ago, I decided it was time for me to give back to my community, I wanted to run for city council. A strong asset is my common sense. I don't make rash decisions, I wait to get all available information, then ponder facts. We can make this the best place we can, to live in, I love Riverton & the sense of family it embraces/promotes. Let's take what is right with Riverton, build upon it to make it stronger.

Link for water comparison study
Here is the study I have been referring to, and promised to put on my blog and FB when recieved. It is very interesting and shows how much any change to our water system would cost residents. Note this was done in 2008, so the cost would likely be more.

UPD petition of protest
Here is the info from Jim Bradley, county councilmen, on how to file a petition of protest. I have told many of you, I would put this up when I recieved it, so here it is.
Dear Riverton City Resident:
Thank you again for attending the Salt Lake Valley Law Enforcement Service Area public hearing on Tuesday in Riverton City. I enjoyed the opportunity to hear from you and talk with you. I appreciated the thoughtful nature of your comments and questions and especially want to thank you for taking time from your busy schedule to attend the meeting and be involved in decisions regarding your community.
My staff is still in the process of pulling together specific responses to the questions and concerns raised. We will mail and e-mail information to you early next week and we will post responses on the SLVLESA website at www.slvlesa.org.
However, I wanted to quickly get the state statute regarding the annexation protest to you. You can access the relevant code at:
As was mentioned at the hearing, State law allows a minimum of a 30-day protest period from the date of the public hearing. However, as outlined in my earlier letter to you, we will consider all protests received by November 30, 2011. Inasmuch as we need to verify and certify all protests received, please send them at your earliest convenience, but we must receive them by November 30.
When we began creation of the SLVLESA in 2007 we did so expressly to allow local jurisdictions to join together to create a stable, cost efficient way to pay for consolidated police services. The objective of the Service Area is to fund high quality law enforcement services at the lowest cost possible while allowing communities to maintain local control. We look forward to the prospect of joining with Riverton City if the pending annexation is successful.
Again, I will be sending more follow up information to you early next week, but wanted to get this initial information to you at this time.
Thank you again for attending the public hearing.
Respectfully,
Jim Bradley

Water ISSUE
Let me just say--right now, I do not like the drinking water here in Riverton, either. I wish I could promise you that if you, but vote for me, it will all be magically changed with new technology. Unfortunately, this is an age old problem, and new technology COSTS money---lots of it. There was a feasability study done by Epic Engineers in 2008. At that time, it would have cost approx 19 million to update all the pump houses and then the cost to buy water from somewhere else, would (again approx) triple our water bill. That was three years ago, not sure what inflation would do to those figures, but I am thinking it probably would cost even more. There is a different "modern technology" to "make" our water better, and those procedures are called EDR and RO (RO--also known as purple light/ultra violet). The problem with these procedures is it produces a by product waste water, which we would not be able to dump anywhere. We cannot put it in the Jordan River, nor will anywhere else accept the waste water. Again, this solution, if available, would cost the taxpayers alot of money. Trust me, if there were an easy, affordable solution, I would be all for it, but I do not believe the citizens want to pay the cost of water improvments. We only drink 1-2% of the culinary water, the rest is used for washing clothes, dishes, bathing and etc. Now maybe we would dring a little more than 1% if it only tasted better--you get my jest. If you have any questions on this, please contact me at my e-amil address or you could also call and talk to the city water deptartment, they are more than willing to explain it in further detail. I took a few hours when I decided to run for city council and talked to the water dept manager about this and other issues they are facing, I got a pretty good understanding about why this is not economically feasable to do.

UPD NOT DONE DEAL
I cannot believe the number of calls I am getting about the "secret" meeting of the city council. There was NO secret meeting and the city council did not pass the UPD motion. The motion was presented to the city council, and they had to vote as to whether or not a feasability study could be launched. THAT IS ALL THEY VOTED ON. I have been attending the city council meetings for the past 3 months and I heard what was said on the day, the city council voted to proceed with the study. We have until Nov 30th to file a petition of protest and that will put this issue to a Riverton City ballot vote. This is a Salt Lake County issue, not a city one. The county wanted us to become part of the UPD district, the county was to have sent the citizens the information about this proposal, not the city. When I recieve the information about the petition of protest, I will post it on here. Mayor Applegarth gave his personal cell phone number at the last city council meeting. It is 801-520-9947. False information is being spread, call the city and find out the truth. They are more than willing to tell you what is going on. You are also welcome to call me about this, as many have, but I wanted to put correct information out there, so you can read what I know, and what is really happening. Thanks for your interest and input.
